Why I Stopped Reading the Sabbats, Moons, and Zodiac Separately

You Know the Sabbats. You Know the Moon Phases. So Why Does the Timing Still Feel Off?

Most people learn the Wheel of the Year in pieces. The eight sabbats in one place, moon phases somewhere else, zodiac seasons maybe from an astrology account they follow. All of it separately, all of it useful on its own, and yet something still feels like it's missing when you sit down to actually work with the energy of a moment.

What's missing is the overlap.

The sabbats, moon phases, and zodiac seasons aren't three separate systems running independently — they're three layers of the same wheel turning simultaneously, and the combined energy of all three at any given moment is what actually tells you what's happening and what to do with it. Reading just one layer is like looking at a map with half the information missing. You can navigate but you'll miss things.

This is the framework I use for everything — my making, my practice, my content, all of it. And once you start reading the layers together it becomes hard to go back to reading them separately because the combined picture is so much richer and more specific than any single layer on its own.

How to Read a Layered Moment

Every moment in the Wheel has five layers worth reading:

The sabbat tells you the overarching seasonal energy and your goal — where the year is in its cycle and what that cycle is calling for.

The zodiac season tells you the style and quality of energy available — how to move, how to approach the work.

The moon phase tells you what kind of action fits — beginning, building, completing, releasing, resting.

The moon sign tells you where to focus that action — what area of life or energy the moon is highlighting.

The element tells you what kind of magical work is most supported right now and what to actually do with it.

When you read all five together you get something specific enough to actually work with — not just "it's a good time for new beginnings" but a real picture of what this particular moment is asking for and how to meet it.

Three Upcoming Moments

June 29th — Litha + Cancer Season + Full Moon in Capricorn

As Litha moves through Cancer season under a full moon in Capricorn, this is a time for gentle visibility by holding or completing foundational needs. The peak solar energy of Litha wants acknowledgment and completion, Cancer season asks you to move through that gently and protectively, and the Capricorn full moon illuminates structure and foundation — what's holding you up and what still needs reinforcing.

Fire, Water, and Earth are all active here. Light a devotional candle for what you've built. Brew an intentional tea and sit with what the foundation of your work actually looks like right now.

July 21st — Litha + Leo Season + Waxing Moon in Libra

As Litha moves through Leo season under a waxing moon in Libra, this is a time for visibility and confidence by attracting self love. You'll notice that Litha and Leo season are pointing in a similar direction here — both carrying strong solar, visible, outward energy. When layers reinforce each other like this it's a signal that the energy is particularly strong for that specific work. This is not a subtle moment for staying small or invisible.

Fire and Air are active. Write a petition letter for what you're calling in — confidence, visibility, self love — and burn it. Let the combined energy of Fire and Air carry it.

August 28th — Lughnasadh + Virgo Season + Partial Lunar Eclipse Full Moon in Pisces

As Lughnasadh moves through Virgo season under a partial lunar eclipse full moon in Pisces, this is a time for rewards from skills by completing dreams. This is a genuinely layered moment — Lughnasadh's harvest energy, Virgo's practical precision, and an eclipse full moon in dreamy Pisces all at once. Eclipse energy amplifies whatever the full moon is already doing, and a Pisces moon is asking you to let your intuition lead even while Virgo wants everything practical and precise. The combination asks you to take real physical action toward your goals while also trusting what you can't fully see yet.

Earth, Fire, and Water are all active. Take one concrete physical action toward a goal. Then do a tea leaf reading — let the practical action and the intuitive reading inform each other.

Reading the Wheel This Way Changes Everything

Once you start seeing these layers together the timing of your practice stops feeling arbitrary. You're not just doing moon rituals because it's a full moon — you're working with a specific convergence of energies that won't happen exactly this way again. That's what makes the work feel meaningful rather than mechanical.

If you want a reference tool for reading your own layered moments I put together a free guide — The Layered Wheel — that gives you the formula, all the keyword lists, and a complete elemental action guide so you can read any moment in the year and know what to do with it. It's designed to be something you come back to so you can start using it immediately wherever you are in the year.

Rooted in rhythm. Risen in ritual. Lit from within.
